COLAS has a mission to imagine, build, and maintain sustainable transport infrastructure from its local roots around the world. Backed by a global network of 1,000 local construction business units and 3,000 material production and recycling units in more than 50 countries on five continents, the Group’s 65,000 employees act locally to connect communities and foster exchanges for today and tomorrow.
Together, we strive to be a leader in designing and delivering innovative and sustainable solutions in each market we serve.
The COLAS name was derived from the terms ‘COLd’ and ‘ASphalt’.
In 1925 two English companies Asphalt Cold Mix Ltd merged with a company called COLAS Mix Manufacturing Ltd to form COLAS Product Ltd to supply bitumen emulsions for use on roads in Great Britain, Northern Ireland and the Irish Free State.
The COLAS Road Company was founded in France in 1929 by Shell and Société Générale d’Entreprises (SGE). The company originally specialised in the production of bitumen emulsion in addition to road works. Over the years, the company’s name changed to COLAS SA International Group which saw expansion from roads to all forms of transportation infrastructure across the world.
With a significant investment in research and development capability, COLAS specialises in developing innovative materials and processes to create safe and sustainable transport systems.
COLAS works in the construction and maintenance of transport infrastructure through three main business segments: roads, construction materials, and railways. In 2023, the Group recorded the following figures.
The COLAS Australia Group was formed in 2008 with the acquisition of SAMI Bitumen Technologies. The COLAS Australia Group has continued to expand its operations throughout Australia with the acquisition of a number of local companies and is now supported by 700 employees over 15 work sites across Australia and New Zealand.
To provide world class innovative and sustainable solutions for transport infrastructure for future generations.
To deliver innovative and sustainable infrastructure through our five key cornerstones:
Respect, treat others how you would like to be treated
Respect is THE absolute foundation of everything. Without it, there is no trust, no team, no future. At Colas, we care about and consider everyone – our clients, teams, colleagues and stakeholders. We champion transparency and honesty, and we stick to our word. It is the key to a collective that moves forward together, with high standards and consideration.
Commitment is about giving your heart and soul
When we commit, it is a collective pact and an investment in everyone’s success. At Colas, you don’t succeed alone. We invest in our customers, our teams, and our colleagues, and with our ethical approach and total transparency, we know we can count on our people and partners. This collective energy allows us to go further, to overcome any challenge, and deliver our exceptionally high standards. We commit 100% and we commit together.
Bold innovation, not blind ambition
At Colas, we push boundaries, imagine what does not yet exist, and dare what others do not.
It is about analyzing, preparing, calculating risks and pre-empting challenges before taking on the adventure. We innovate with ambition, and we find solutions. Great pioneers are not those who just take a leap of faith and hope for the best, they form their vision and ambition based on intelligence, expertise and boldness.
Knowledge and experience are meant to be passed on
At Colas, we don’t believe in well-kept secrets. Each of us holds knowledge that could and should be shared. We see sharing and guidance as fundamental in helping us all grow. This also ensures that we do not rely solely on a few experts but on a strong collective. We pass on our knowledge so that we can achieve the best of ourselves and others.
Research and development sit at the core of COLAS. It enables customers to select from products and services with guaranteed durability and performance in the knowledge that they have been rigorously tested, researched, modified and enhanced.
The international COLAS Group invests around 70 million euro per year in research and development providing an extensive international network supported by over 2,000 research experts, engineers and technicians. Our local laboratories and technical experts work closely with the Campus for Science and Technology near Paris – the world’s largest private road research laboratory – to develop new improved products.
