Synergy of Crumb Rubber Sealing and Geotextile in the Midwest Gascoyne Region

Main Roads Western Australia (MRWA) is placing greater emphasis on sustainability while still focusing on value for money across its rural road network. In response, COLAS WA adopted a combined treatment of crumb rubber spray sealing and geotextile membranes throughout the 2023 season. This approach featured prominently in the Midwest Gascoyne Reseal Contract, where we completed 38 kilometres of resealing using this method.

Our mobile crumb rubber binder (CRB) operation and our crews’ refined geotextile laying process delivered strong results. The project not only benefited the road authority but also enhanced COLAS WA’s technical reputation.

Our S45R and S5R seals are designed to withstand the harsh impact of quads and road trains that dominate WA’s regional roads. Over the past three to four years, CWA’s use of crumb rubber binders has grown by nearly 300%, reflecting growing confidence in their performance.

Adding a geotextile layer improves the road’s strength and durability. This treatment helps resist traffic stress, reduces deformation, improves skid resistance, and extends pavement life beyond that of traditional sealing methods.

Although this method costs more for low-volume roads, its durability results in fewer maintenance disruptions and safer driving conditions. These benefits are especially valuable in the Midwest Gascoyne, where the road network supports a busy mining industry.

Given these advantages, we believe the combination of crumb rubber spray sealing and geotextile membranes is a strong candidate to become a preferred treatment method. Looking ahead, our sealing crews are ready to build on this success and lead further innovations in the seasons ahead.
